Ruth Griffin: Feminist Rebellion Through Dress | Galway City Museum

TULCA presents Feminist Rebellion Through Dress, a lecture by fashion historian, writer and broadcaster Ruth Griffin, as part of the 2026 festival programme.

Ruth Griffin explores how women have long used dress as a language of rebellion, from Countess Markievicz swapping silk for breeches and a revolver to lead the Irish Citizen Army, to Vivienne Westwood turning punk provocation into a defining force in mainstream fashion. Her work traces how what we wear has always carried what we weren't permitted to say aloud.

Ruth Griffin
Ruth Griffin is a fashion historian, writer, and broadcaster specialising in Irish fashion history. She holds an MA in the History and Culture of Fashion from the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, and a BA in Fashion Design from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.
