AkiDwA / SAFE: Talk with Euphomia Edward – Beyond the Silence: FGM, Voice and Belonging in Ireland
This talk with Euphomia Edward, presented with AkiDwA and SAFE, considers FGM, voice and belonging in Ireland.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is often discussed in terms of statistics, law and health, but behind these conversations are women, families and communities navigating complex experiences of identity, culture, migration and belonging. This session will create space for an open and thoughtful conversation about FGM in the Irish context, exploring what FGM is, how it affects women and girls, and some of the challenges survivors and communities may face when seeking support. It will also consider the importance of listening to women’s voices, challenging stigma and silence, and working with communities in ways that promote dignity, understanding and change. Drawing on AkiDwA’s work with migrant women and communities in Ireland, the session will invite participants to reflect on how we can build greater awareness and collective responsibility in preventing FGM and supporting those affected.
Established in 2001, Akina Dada wa Africa-AkiDwA (Swahili for sisterhood) is a national network of migrant women living in Ireland. The organisation promotes the equality of migrant women in Irish society, free of gender and racial stereotyping and applies a holistic approach to integration, promoting a migrant and gender-specific approach to public services, as well as encouraging migrant women’s access to mainstream services and initiatives. AkiDwA employs several strategies to achieve its objectives, outreach, networking, research, policy work and capacity building.
