The White Room Gallery – November 9-November 24, 2007Patricia Lambert
‘TITLE TBA' is an exhibition of works by Patricia Lambert, winner of the Royal Hibernian Academy Axa Insurance prize for drawing in 2007. The exhibition will officially open at The White Room Gallery in Liosbán on Friday 9th of November at 7pm as part of TULCA, Galway’s season of visual art. All are welcome to attend the opening reception. In the exhibition one will find that Lambert’s work coalesces drawing, oil and acrylic pieces into a cohesive yet diverse show. The predominant focus of the work is on Windows, the reflections of which conceal and reveal simultaneously. In some of the pieces it is deliberately unclear whether the audience is viewing from the interior or exterior space, which implores the viewer to develop their own interpretation of the work.
In using Windows as a statement within the theme of Hospitality, Lambert inquires into the invitation of the window as a sanctuary or porthole to view, to explore or to escape. Linking, in the most physical way, to the outside world. Although the work is primarily comprised of acrylics with a layer then added of oil, Lambert acknowledges that no technique or medium is really out of bounds in relation to her work.
The White Room Gallery show exemplifies Lambert’s ease of passage through mediums while offering an exploration of the duality of meaning insinuated by windows. Several of the colours used within the pieces are mixed with white to lighten the tone, while in other instances she applies paint thickly and semi-opaquely for a solid and often melancholic atmosphere. Notwithstanding, Lambert is keen to convince the viewer of the integrity of the subject.
In a final note, Lambert describes her personal process of creating these pieces and what the viewer will find when they come to The White Room Gallery to engage with her work:
“The Zen masters use the word “Satori” to describe a flash of insight, a moment where one feels totally present. My paintings and drawings are a visual evidence of my re-visiting, re-experiencing, and re-connecting with places that have affected me past and present. They attempt to engage the viewer in experiences I have had and they allow for the visitor to participate in my personal encounters.”
